Situated about 6 miles north of London, Wood Green is a residential area made up of late 19th century and early 20th century housing, as well as a mix of post-war and more recent developments. Originally known as Woodleigh a hamlet created near the junction of the London to Enfield road and the roads that led to Barnet and the village of Tottenham. In its early days it was a welcome stop for traders before the final leg of the long journey to the London markets. Today Wood Green is still the urban heart of Haringey and one of London’s major metropolitan centres. Like much of the country, the area is undergoing a transition from a traditional retail-heavy high street to a more diverse mixed-use economy consisting of creative industries, local entrepreneurship, and new organisations providing stability, resources, and leadership to the business community.

Despite the major changes the area is undergoing, the High Road remains one of the busiest shopping stretches in North London. The Mall Wood Green is home to large chains like TK Maxx, Primark, and H&M. Although large chains dominate the council’s Shaping Wood Green strategy, there is an effort to diversify the high street with more independent food and drink businesses to help grow the evening economy. Based across 4 buildings on Coburg Road, is a leading arts development, training and creative regeneration charity called Collage Arts. They provide affordable studios to artists. Additionally the landmark creative hubs, The Chocolate Factory & Parma House, provide studios for hundreds of artists, designers, and small creative businesses. Over the years, the ‘work from home’ and start-up population has increased tenfold. The Wood Green BID actively promotes the area, focusing on safety, cleanliness, and business networking through it’s ‘Invest Wood Green’ program. Massive mixed-use scheme, Lordship Lane Development, was recently approved and will bring over 600 student beds and thousands of square feet of new flexible commercial space. Developments like the Wood Green Timber Yard, which was approved this year, are replacing old industrial sites with high-density housing, which will in turn increase the local consumer base for nearby businesses.
