Known as the birth place of English kings, this Royal Borough is a critical economic engine for South West London. The challenge for businesses striving for growth in this part of the country is keeping up with the digital expectations of a highly educated and tech-savvy population.

One of only a handful of Royal Boroughs in the country, it holds the title because the the coronations of at least seven Anglo-Saxon kings took place here, including Athelstan, the first king of a unified England. The heart of the town continues to be the Ancient Market which has been trading since the 1200s (today the town is London’s third largest retail destination). This historical prestige sets the tone for the businesses in the area which reflect longevity, trust and premium brand positioning. Whether you’re an artisan bakery or a boutique law practice, being based in Kingston carries weight and credibility that newer London companies often don’t have.

Kingston is currently booming with headquarters. While many London boroughs saw a shift to remote work, Kingston’s unique blend of riverside lifestyle and proximity to the City has made it a magnet for large corporate relocations. Merlin Entertainments, Sega Amusements, BAE Systems, as well as global tech companies like Google and Microsoft, all have a strong footprint in the area. The recent completion of Unilever’s massive global headquarters in the town centre has fundamentally shifted the local economy - bringing in thousands of high-skilled workers daily, increasing the demand for high-end hospitality, professional services, and, crucially, the kind of sophisticated digital infrastructure that I specialise in.

Additionally, Kingston University brings 20,000+ students to the area, making it a massive driver of the innovation economy. It produces more graduate startups than any other UK institution. I work with startups to create lean yet scalable websites that cut through the noise and clearly convey the value proposition to potential investors and stakeholders.

Away from the large corporations - Old London Road is a treasure trove of independent hidden gems. However, may of them are struggling with digital transformation - something which the borough's Economic Development Strategy (2024-2028) seeks to improve by offering grants and Digital Ambassadors to help SMEs bridge the gap.

For businesses in Kingston-Upon-Thames, your digital presence must meet a set of of rigorous standards - some legal, some competitive. Every website must include:

  • Registered Information: Company name, registration number, and registered office address (even for sole traders).

  • UK-GDPR & Privacy: With the high volume of high-net-worth data being handled in this area, privacy policies must be robust and transparent.

  • Accessibility (WCAG 2.2): As a borough with a significant aging population alongside its student base, websites must be accessible to people with visual or motor impairments.

These days Google understands that 80% of local searches are more likely to be walking down Clarence Street phone in hand than sitting at a desk with a laptop. Over the years it switched to a ‘mobile first’ approach to looking at websites - it is rumoured that ‘mobile only’ is not far around the corner. That’s why I always design websites with mobile in mind. After all, a website is not a magazine - it must be dynamic. With 300+ shops and restaurants by the riverside hyper-local SEO is key - it’s the difference between a Saturday with 10 customers and a Saturday with 500. Businesses are increasingly leveraging tools like the InKingston App to capture their slice of the large number of visitors from Surrey and South West London. I build websites that drive traffic and turn window shoppers into customers and clients.

Further afield, the exists an intellectual economy of consultants and experts who often work from home or co-working spaces. The design and architectural scene’s growth has been driven by the Premium Extension market in Surbiton and the borough's strict conservation regulations. Companies like Hollaway Studio and AURA Architecture navigate clients seeking 21st-century sustainability within Grade II listed constraints. Browse a selection of websites I have built for architects and interior designers. With Kingston Business School acting as a local incubator, there is a huge surge in Fractional CTOs and AI Adoption consultants - as well as Business Growth & Strategy Consultants. I have worked with a number of professional businesses from wealth management companies to consultants - browse a small selection of those projects here.
